Morning Edition on Wednesday, August 29th: THE PAUL L. DUNBAR EDUCATION MUSEUM

$

The small community of Grahamtown is a community within a community - the traditional heart of the African American community in Rutherford County. Several world famous black Americans began their education in small black schools in the county from the end of the civil war to the end of segregation, not only in Rutherford County, but in thousands of small communities across the country. The Paul Laurance Dunbar Room of Remembrance Education Museum is located in Grahamtown and is named for one of those famous African-Americans who went on to fame despite humble beginnings and segregated education. Dr. Lee Greene began the museum to educate children and young adults about their roots, so that these stories will become a part of them and important to them. Join me for my conversation with Greene about his own education and the difficulties of finding these important parts of history from a time when not many records were kept by whites or blacks, except within the churches or families.

Morning Edition on 9/13: WALLACE: THE UNDERDOG WHO CONQUERED A SPORT, SAVED A MARRIAGE AND....

What do you think of when you see a pit bull?  Do you watch him carefully - whether he's on a leash or not?  Are you afraid he could attack at any moment? Unfortunately, that's the reaction most people have when they see or even hear about a pit bull.  Fortunately for Wallace not everyone feels that way, like author Jim Gorant, who heard about Wallace and just had to write his story.

The book is called "Wallace: The Underdog Who Conquered a Sport, Saved a Marriage and Championed Pit Bulls - One Flying Disc at a Time." Now don't be put off by the title. Yes, it's a little wordy, but this is a book about stereotypes - about animals and people - and you'll be glad you read it.

Join me as I talk about the incredible story of Wallace with Jim Gorant, Senior Editor at Sports Illustrated and best-selling author of "The Lost Dogs".

Open Hearts Art Center is one of the most quiet organizations in Asheville. The fact that I had never heard of it before I was contacted about doing a story on the organization is no real surprise.  Sometimes when I get going in one direction, I miss everything that happens around me.  But it seems I'm not the only person who hasn't heard about Open Hearts and all of the wonderful, exciting things these folks do for 'differently-abled' adults from ages 18 to 70-something.

Open hearts is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2004 by three women who had a passion for creating a program that combined their love for art with their desire to make a difference in the lives of these extraordinary adults.

Don't miss my conversation with Salley Williamson, just one of the artists that give of themselves in order to make others feel proud and talented.

The new season of arts and cultural events is here, and in my second of a series of examples of what is available in our coverage area, I'm speaking with Lori Davis of Arts and Cultural Events - or ACE - in Culowhee at Western Carolina University. Although located at a college - like my first example, The Foundation Performing Arts Center - ACE is different in that WCU is a university that is known for its arts and cultural programs.

Davis, whose job encompasses many other functions in addition to ACE, says it is her job to find events that will enhance the classes and engage the students. Tune in to hear what the 2012-2013 season of ACE will offer to students and the public.

In the third in a series discussing the variety of entertainment available all around us here in Western North Carolina, I took a look at Chapman Cultural Center, just across the border in Spartanburg, SC.  Each of the previous offerings has been different in the types of entertainment offered, for whom the entertainment is selected, and,  in the case of the Chapman Cultural Center, the fact that it is possible to bring together an entire county's worth of organizations under one giant umbrella.

Steve Wong is the Marketing Director and it's his job to keep track of everything that is going on, and to spread the word...a job he does exceedingly well. Join us for this fun informative interview.

Morning Edition 9/25/12: VICTORY LAB - THE SECRET SCIENCE OF WINNING CAMPAIGNS

With every single day, there is another news story about this candidate or that candidate, this political ad or that one, this lie or that one and, yes, even this truth or that one.

With so much coverage during any election, is it any wonder that most of us just want to tune it all out?

According to Sasha Issenberg, Washington correspondent for Monocle, who covered the 2008 presidential campaign for The Boston Globe, and has written for George and Philadephia magazines, politics is really all about science. The science of politics is statistics and how they are gathered and how the candidates use them. Since the 1800's, statisticians have been trying - mostly unsuccessfully - to get politicians to listen to them and allow them to assist them to be successful in winning the campaigns.  Join me for this fascinating look at the secret way to win elections.

Morning Edition 9/26/12: ONLINE CLASS OFFERING CREATING MOBILE APPS FOR HTML5

For many,  education is a necessity to start a new career, to move up the ladder in your current career or even just for fun. Community Colleges have become the hub of that type of learning in North Carolina – as well as other states – and the perfect place to start can be through Continuing Education. For example, I first saw an e-mail from Marnie Beaver here at Isothermal Community College about a class called 'Creating Mobile Apps with HTML5'.  I was literally blown away. I had no idea that our little college, in a county that doesn't yet even have broadband everywhere, would have a class that could teach me how to create my own apps for my Smart Phone. Then, when I started talking with Marnie about this one class, I quickly realized that it was just the tip of the iceberg for anyone interested in learning just about anything you could name. Tune in to learn what you can learn about learning.

North Carolina has staked its claim as the state where the real first gold rush took place. The documentary entitled "Gold Fever and the Bechtler Mint" was filmed in Rutherford County and other locations across the state, and was produced and directed by UNC-TV's Scott Davis. The movie tells the story of the Bechtler Mint during the years when North Carolina was the major gold-mining state, and of Christopher Bechtler of Rutherfordton, who, in 1832, minted the first one-dollar gold coin in the nation - 17 years before the U.S. Mint.

The 30-minute documentary will debut in Rutherfordton, NC, this Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Rutherford-Spindale High School, and admission is free. The documentary will then air on UNC-TV statewide on Tuesday, October 2nd at 9 p.m. and again on Thursday, October 4th at 9 p.m. Don't miss this interview about just one of the many fascinating historical stories in Rutherford County, NC.

President Eisenhower was a war hero as well as a President. But how many of us can really remember hearing anything much about his two terms as President of the United States? Author Evan Thomas turns the lights on a President in the vein of John Wayne: Tough, but a man who worked mostly behind the scenes using surrogates to act on his behalf. It was all a part of his two-term struggle to never tell anyone what he was really thinking about pending wars, the use of the nuclear weapon, his compassion and understanding of how the world really works, and his long-term serious illnesses. Join me as I talk to Evans about this US President that could teach a thing or two to almost every president since - or before, for that matter.

Morning Edition 10/15/12: THE MOM 100 COOKBOOK BY KATIE WORKMAN

I've only recently become a cookbook junkie. It came about because I decided it was time to start eating healthy food because I plan to live to be 150 years old.
The MOM 100 Cookbook is actually for moms with young children who are picky eaters, to teach them to be more adventurous as they grow their palates along with their bodies.
But I - and apparently many other cookbook readers - told Katie that it's a great cookbook for adults as well. I learned a long time ago that I like to cook when I can, but got most of my skills and recipes from TV Cooking Shows. Now I'm learning how much I've missed by not reading cookbooks from cover to cover.

Written as a primer on the music business from the bottom of the pile, Jeter has documented his years as co-owner of the Handlebar in Greenville, SC, with a sense of humor and fascinating stories.

Jeter and his brother decided to enter the Concert Hall business with absolutely no experience, but a shared love of good music. From the tremendous learning curve required to learn the business to the ridiculous demands put into booking contracts, this book is a great read from the first page to the last.
