The small community of Grahamtown is a community within a community - the traditional heart of the African American community in Rutherford County. Several world famous black Americans began their education in small black schools in the county from the end of the civil war to the end of segregation, not only in Rutherford County, but in thousands of small communities across the country. The Paul Laurance Dunbar Room of Remembrance Education Museum is located in Grahamtown and is named for one of those famous African-Americans who went on to fame despite humble beginnings and segregated education. Dr. Lee Greene began the museum to educate children and young adults about their roots, so that these stories will become a part of them and important to them. Join me for my conversation with Greene about his own education and the difficulties of finding these important parts of history from a time when not many records were kept by whites or blacks, except within the churches or families.

Unfortunately, that's the reaction most people have when they see or even hear about a pit bull. Fortunately for Wallace not everyone feels that way, like author Jim Gorant, who heard about Wallace and just had to write his story.

Morning Edition on Monday, Sept. 17th: OPEN HEARTS ART CENTER
Open Hearts Art Center is one of the most quiet organizations in Asheville. The fact that I had never heard of it before I was contacted about doing a story on the organization is no real surprise. Sometimes when I get going in one direction, I miss everything that happens around me. But it seems I'm not the only person who hasn't heard about Open Hearts and all of the wonderful, exciting things these folks do for 'differently-abled' adults from ages 18 to 70-something.
Open hearts is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2004 by three women who had a passion for creating a program that combined their love for art with their desire to make a difference in the lives of these extraordinary adults.

Morning Edition on 9/19/12: WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY - ARTS AND CULTURAL EVENTS
The new season of arts and cultural events is here, and in my second of a series of examples of what is available in our coverage area, I'm speaking with Lori Davis of Arts and Cultural Events - or ACE - in Culowhee at Western Carolina University. Although located at a college - like my first example, The Foundation Performing Arts Center - ACE is different in that WCU is a university that is known for its arts and cultural programs.
Davis, whose job encompasses many other functions in addition to ACE, says it is her job to find events that will enhance the classes and engage the students. Tune in to hear what the 2012-2013 season of ACE will offer to students and the public.

In the third in a series discussing the variety of entertainment available all around us here in Western North Carolina, I took a look at Chapman Cultural Center, just across the border in Spartanburg, SC. Each of the previous offerings has been different in the types of entertainment offered, for whom the entertainment is selected, and, in the case of the Chapman Cultural Center, the fact that it is possible to bring together an entire county's worth of organizations under one giant umbrella.

Morning Edition 9/26/12: ONLINE CLASS OFFERING CREATING MOBILE APPS FOR HTML5
For many, education is a necessity to start a new career, to move up the ladder in your current career or even just for fun. Community Colleges have become the hub of that type of learning in North Carolina – as well as other states – and the perfect place to start can be through Continuing Education. For example, I first saw an e-mail from Marnie Beaver here at Isothermal Community College about a class called 'Creating Mobile Apps with HTML5'. I was literally blown away. I had no idea that our little college, in a county that doesn't yet even have broadband everywhere, would have a class that could teach me how to create my own apps for my Smart Phone. Then, when I started talking with Marnie about this one class, I quickly realized that it was just the tip of the iceberg for anyone interested in learning just about anything you could name. Morning Edition 9/28/12: GOLD FEVER AND THE BECHTLER MINT DOCUMENTARY WORLD PREMIERE
North Carolina has staked its claim as the state where the real first gold rush took place. The documentary entitled "Gold Fever and the Bechtler Mint" was filmed in Rutherford County and other locations across the state, and was produced and directed by UNC-TV's Scott Davis. The movie tells the story of the Bechtler Mint during the years when North Carolina was the major gold-mining state, and of Christopher Bechtler of Rutherfordton, who, in 1832, minted the first one-dollar gold coin in the nation - 17 years before the U.S. Mint.
The 30-minute documentary will debut in Rutherfordton, NC, this Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Rutherford-Spindale High School, and admission is free. The documentary will then air on UNC-TV statewide on Tuesday, October 2nd at 9 p.m. and again on Thursday, October 4th at 9 p.m. Don't miss this interview about just one of the many fascinating historical stories in Rutherford County, NC.

Morning Edition 10/3/12: RUTHERFORD HOUSING PARTNERSHIP AND UNITED WAY JOIN FOR 'WEEK OF CARING'
October 20 through the 27th is the 11th annual Week of Caring, a partnership of United Way of Rutherford County, NC, and the Rutherford Housing Partnership. The event leads up to the National Make a Difference Day on October 27th. Nell Bovender, Executive Director of Rutherford Housing Partnership talks about the growth from just one day of volunteering by county residents, businesses and organizations to a full week of working to assist low-income homeowners, seniors and disabled residents with everything from yard work to building ramps, to winterizing, plumbing, and even roof repairs. Volunteers are needed as well as names of those in need of assistance. In addition, Bovender will talk about the 10th Anniversary Celebration and fund-raiser for the Rutherford Women Roofers to take place on October 13th at The Foundation Performing Arts Center at Isothermal Community College. Morning Edition 10/15/12: THE MOM 100 COOKBOOK BY KATIE WORKMAN
I've only recently become a cookbook junkie. It came about because I decided it was time to start eating healthy food because I plan to live to be 150 years old.
The MOM 100 Cookbook is actually for moms with young children who are picky eaters, to teach them to be more adventurous as they grow their palates along with their bodies.
But I - and apparently many other cookbook readers - told Katie that it's a great cookbook for adults as well. I learned a long time ago that I like to cook when I can, but got most of my skills and recipes from TV Cooking Shows. Now I'm learning how much I've missed by not reading cookbooks from cover to cover.

Morning Edition 11/21: CAROLINA MOUNTAIN LAND CONSERVANCY'S NEW PROGRAM TO GET FOLKS OUTSIDE
The North Carolina Mountains are beautiful, but they're not just pretty to look at; they are incredible for anyone who wants to get outside and enjoy them. The Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy is a land trust that works in WNC - mainly in Henderson, Rutherford, Transylvania, Polk and Buncombe counties. The Conservancy has just released a new version of its popular program to get people out the house and outside exploring the lands that are being conserved.
